Eat Your Vegetables, Please

Published by Anne under parenting, teenagers Edit This

I know parents of toddlers have this problem all of the time, but I would have thought once they become teenagers that would change.  I am talking about picky eating.

Frankie eats many different things but they have to be made a certain way or from a certain place.  Since I lost my job in November I have had to be a bit more frugal.  This is not a bad thing.  One of the those frugality’s is bread.  Sure bread is not that expensive.  But when you are feeding a family of five who eat sandwiches daily, a two-dollar loaf of bread gets expensive.  I can bake bread for less and everyone seems to enjoy it.  Well, everyone except Frankie likes my homemade bread.

Then there is Lulu.  She still wants nothing to do with a vegetable.  She will eat corn and peas; green beans are okay.  That is it.  How did this happen?  I love vegetables.  That is one thing my mom never had an issue, with either of her children.  In fact, as a teenager I would eat a can of beets for dinner and be happy.  I know, not the most well-rounded dinner but it is not like we ate that way every night.  Besides, that was not my point.  Maybe she will like them when she is older.  I am not holding my breath.

Benny eats pretty much anything and we have to really watch him.  He is not too much into the vegetable thing either, but he is not as adamant as Lulu.  He is a growing boy so I try to be lenient with his eating habits.  He does eat an apple each day. Benny actual requests apples for snacking.

So, this gets me to wondering, are picky eaters born or made?  Some of Frankie’s pickiness can be traced to me.  I will only eat certain things from certain places.  Then again I prefer to eat at home so this really is not a huge issue.  But I eat my veggies.  I do not know.  Maybe it is a little of both.  What do you think?
