What to Wear
I do not know about you, but my teenagers could not be more like night and day. My oldest, Frankie, is seventeen and has a style all her own. Lately it consists of jeans rolled up over the knee, over-the-knee socks or her knee high Converse, layered shirts - one striped and one with some character on it. She actually looks good and would fit in well in New York City or in South Florida, but in extremely rural Virginia she really stands out.
My younger daughter, Lulu, is fifteen and much more reserved. She tends to live in her jeans. Red and Black are her favorite colors although she does wear others - no pink. Lulu used to wear the baggiest of t-shirts. She still wears t-shirts, but now they are more feminine. Although, she does wear my over-the-knee socks under her holey-knee jeans. It is cold here.
My son is still growing. At twelve he seems to need new pants every four to six weeks; like a haircut. His style is messy. I remember the girls going through this phase and will be glad when it is over.
This is a good time in their lives to experiment with their clothes as long as they are appropriate for the occasion. Teenagers get to find their style; decide whether it is better to fit in, not fit in, or not care. As a parent I try to be involved in my kid’s clothing choices; not overbearing. Crazy socks, mismatched clothing, and a few holes in the knees is okay by me.
